Friends and Folk follows Belaku Studio, a recording studio in a remote village of Belgaum, which was founded to provide a platform for Dalit folk performers in North Karnataka. The studio’s journey unfolds alongside a story of friendship between four performers who built the space together and confront numerous odds in pursuit of their shared passion for music.
Varun Kurtkoti is a filmmaker, community artist and arts educator who divides his time between Bangalore and Dharwad, Karnataka.
Varunʼs practice includes animation, filmmaking, theatre, ethnography and designing arts-based pedagogies. He facilitates arts-based capacity building and community development to workers and young adults across Karnataka, in collaboration with grassroots organizations and educational institutions.
Varun holds an MA in Community Arts & Applied Anthropology from Goldsmiths University, London, and a Diploma in Art & Design from the Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology.
